Angle encoder — purpose, types and working
What is the function of the angle encoder?
Why are two encoders fitted on an ME engine?
What if the angle encoder signal is lost at sea?
MY NOTE — only you see this

Surveyor asked the fail-safe position straight after this one. Be ready.

Purpose

Mounted on the crankshaft free end. It continuously reports crank angle and engine speed to the ECU, and every timed event on the engine comes from that one signal.

Types
  • Incremental — counts pulses from a reference mark. Must re-index after a blackout.
  • Absolute — every position has a unique code, correct the instant power returns. Modern ME uses absolute.
If it fails at sea

Two are fitted for redundancy — the system runs on one and cross-checks the other. Losing both drops the engine to a fixed timing table and power must be reduced.

QWhat happens if it fails at sea?
Two are fitted, so it runs on the healthy one and alarms. On losing both the ECU falls back to fixed timing and you must reduce power…

QHow do I prove it's the encoder and not the ECU?
Check the encoder's own alarm first, then compare the two encoder signals on the MOP…

Angle encoder — purpose, types and working
Purpose

Mounted on the crankshaft free end. It continuously reports crank angle and engine speed to the ECU, and every timed event on the engine is derived from that one signal.

Types
  • Incremental — counts pulses from a reference mark, so it must re-index after a blackout.
  • Absolute — every position carries a unique code and is correct the instant power returns. Modern ME installations use absolute.
What it drives
  • Fuel injection — start and end of injection, per cylinder
  • Exhaust valve — opening and closing angle
  • Cylinder lubrication — timing of each lube pulse
If it fails at sea

Two are fitted for redundancy — the system runs on one and cross-checks against the other. On losing both, the ECU falls back to a fixed timing table and power must be reduced. Expect the surveyor to follow up on the fail-safe position.
